History
Valve was founded on August 24th, 1996 by two former Microsoft employees, Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington. They originally started out as an L.L.C. company based in Kirkland, Washington; however, after incorporation in April, 2003, Valve moved to Bellevue, Washington, the same city in where the original Half-Life publisher, [[|Sierra|Sierra On-Line, Inc.]], was based.
After the success of Half-Life, Valve began developing modifications (such as Team Fortress Classic), expansions and sequels with other teams and game development companies, most notably, Gearbox (for Half-Life: Opposing Force). Valve also began to acquire popular modifications such as Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat, sometimes offering the original modification developers jobs within Valve.
On March 22nd, 2002, Valve announced, Steam, then described as "distribution system" at the Game Developers Conference. On September 12, 2003, Valve released Steam to the public.
On January 10th, 2008, Valve announced the acquisition of Turtle Rock Studios, who went on to work with Valve on Counter-Strike (including the Xbox port of the game), creating some maps for Counter-Strike: Source, and developing the AI director in Left 4 Dead.
