Steam is a digital content distribution platform developed by the Valve Corporation and first released on September 12, 2003. The platform also contains internet-based digital rights management, communications and community functions built in. Steam updates supported content automatically as well as includes its community functions inside any supported game (even games bought outside of Steam) - adding an overlay to communicate to friends, browse the web among its other features.
